Magpie

  • Magpie WEB

James Ramsden and Sam Herlihy, creators of Michelin star restaurant Pidgin, are launching a new concept that takes on a British interpretation of traditional dim sum restaurants. Their new British/Asian fusion restaurant Magpie, on Heddon Street in Mayfair, is set to take influences from across the entirety of Asia, and will offer unusual ingredients including; fennel pollen, Norwegian cheese and miso custard.

A different concept from their popular Pidgin Restaurant which has a set four-course menu that changes each week, Magpie will be based on a trolley service, where there will be hot and cold plates wheeled past tables (similar to an old-fashioned Sushi conveyor belt) that diners can choose directly from.  There will also be the same trolley service for drinks!

Sam Herlihy said; “We’d discussed doing something like this before we even opened Pidgin – it seemed like a fun and novel approach to our current eating out habits, and a way of tackling some of the more frustrating aspects of ‘sharing’ plates,” says James. “It’s less of a ‘sharing’ thing than just a fun restaurant with damn delicious food,” said Herlihy. “If people want to share their food then great – I do – but we want guests to feel more in control of their dinner and not have to fret over how to halve the third croquette.”

The restaurant’s design will be a bright, open space with high ceilings and a poured concrete bar lined with comfortable leather stools. The interior will be inspired by Asian and Californian influences, bringing together hanging canvases and burnt-wood tiling accompanying a large landscape imprinted on the restaurant’s back wall.
